Trusting the Mind

The Divine Mind is the Mind of God, and sees no self anywhere.

Sometimes the strength of our minds is the measure of our deception. Sometimes the intensity of our thought is the power by which we fool ourselves. Sometimes the brilliance of our mental light is precisely what blinds us to the higher realities.

More often than people might suppose, the mind is what holds us back. Much has been said about the power of our emotions to dazzle us, glamour us, and lead us from the Path to God. Our desires pull us this way and that, asking us to participate in the world and its dualities. Desire for wealth, for love, for power, for glory, for success, for influence, for comfort, and for safety drives humanity today. This should not be ignored. But at the same time, those with strong minds who can free themselves from desire and stand outside their own feelings also are likely to suffer from the capacity to develop a mental light that is so bright it blocks out the Truth.

We might suppose that the greater our mental light, the more capable we might be of assimilating the greater, Intuitional Light. But they are two different order of things. The mind is of the personal nature, and is essentially selfish. The Intuition is of the Divine Spirit, and is essentially unselfish, group conscious, and decentralized from individual awareness. We cannot expect to reach the Intuition by developing the mind. This is like saying that we can reach the realm of thought by developing the emotions. Clearly, the opposite is the case. It is the emotions that block out the illumination of the mind. Likewise, it is the mind that is the main factor that blocks out the Wisdom of Spirit.

Therefore, those with a strong and powerful mind have that much harder a time to realize the nature of Spiritual Reality. Now of course, a weak mind cannot grasp the higher Truths. But a strong mind too often thinks it is already in possession of those Truths. But Truth is not something that the human mind can apprehend; Truth is only visible when the mind has been let go and given up, and when that lesser light is lost in the Light of Divine Wisdom.

Now the mental life can prove hard to give up precisely because of its strength, its power, and its clarity. There is a measure of real understanding. There is a realization of the way the universe works. There is an unfoldment of a new vision. This is indeed a positive thing. At the same time, perspective is needed. The true disciple sees things as they are, not the way they are imagined to be. The true disciple realizes that anything that can be apprehended by the mind is itself a part of the Great Illusion, and is to be mistrusted. For the mind is what apprehends the illusion, whereas the Divine Mind is what apprehends Reality. If, then, we are left satisfied with what the mind has revealed to us, then we have stopped half-way up the mountain of Realization, and have given up the quest for Unity with the group, with Spirit, with Reality, and with God.

The individual mind sees separation and division everywhere. The Divine Mind sees Unity and Oneness, without separation. The individual mind apprehends duality, and sees all things in terms of that duality. The Divine Mind sees no duality, but only the Non-dual Universe. The individual mind clings to its own personal intelligence and understanding of the Universe of illusion. The Divine Mind knows only the impersonal, universal Reality, devoid of any illusion or falsehood. The individual mind sees only the self and its goals. The Divine Mind is the Mind of God, and sees no self anywhere. The individual mind seeks the strengthening of the personal self, and the little, cold light of the mind sustains the existence of that self. The realization of the Divine Mind results in the destruction of that self, and the end of all its accumulated knowledge.

Let those with strong minds, therefore, stand outside of their mental life just as thoroughly as they stand outside of their emotional feelings. Let the realization come that all that is seen and known is still but a fraction of the Divine Whole. Let the human mind be let go of so that the Divine Mind may manifest. Let the thoughts and ideas that we have clung to be released so that we are open and receptive to the Truth. Like little children, we then explore the world with a fresh viewpoint and a constant willingness to learn.

Let there be no rest until the lesser light of the mind is drowned out by God's Wisdom, just as the light of the moon pales before the rising of the sun.
