Service and the Group Life

True Service

Service is not a matter of individual people doing individual things in the world that are "good." That's what the world sees, for it only sees separation. And that's what people expect and delight in, for all they see are good and evil — the dualities of this fallen universe — the visible, imperfect realm. Thus they assume that service is just doing good — trying to bring peace on earth, feeding the hungry, teaching, healing, lifting, and aiding.

But true service is not "doing good" or helping egos. This is indeed the "service" that the world applauds, but that is not real, impersonal service. For if our service arises out of self, it is of the fallen universe. If it arises out of our minds, it is of the self. If it springs from a desire to relieve our own sense of suffering, then it is only selfishness glorified. It is only imitation service, not the real thing.

If, therefore, people attempt to do good, they only wind up strengthening the illusion of this world, which is not a proper service goal. That strengthening is done by the belief that improving this world has validity. But this world is like a dream and an illusion — this world cannot be improved. This world is inherently imperfect and fallen. We do not wash mud so that mud is clean, nor dry water to remove its dampness — likewise we do not expect to improve and perfect this universe to remove its dualities — to bring peace rather than war, or love rather than hate — for this is a universe composed of duality.

It is true, we should feed the hungry and house the homeless. But if this is the end of our effort, then we have only succeeded in perpetuating the suffering of mankind. We have not offered that Wisdom that leads to eventual freedom from pain and suffering. And of course, too often we cannot offer that Wisdom no matter what we do, for people continuously live in their own personality and follow it — the divine Spark is trapped, asleep, and dreaming. Most of humanity is possessed and unresponsive to Light no matter how brightly it may shine. So there is little for the true server to awaken in this world.

Service is Not About Us

True service, therefore, has nothing to do with egos in action. Service is not a product of personal intent. Service is not chosen by a mind. Service is not selected by a personality. Service is not something that is produced by thought. Service is not about us or our needs and desires.

True service is the working out of the divine Plan, as Spirit directs. Spirit chooses our actions. Those actions, when seen in the light of the actions of all those who respond to Spirit's Will, is united service to the divine Plan.

True service, then, only becomes possible when Spirit's Call has been heard and the personality has surrendered to God.

True service is what a group does, not what an individual does. A server, therefore, responds to group energy. A server is able to discern what the group needs to perform its task, and acts accordingly. This discernment arises out of a responsiveness to Spirit's impulse. This is especially so if the action needed is related to the individual key — our gift of service — that the server provides to the greater Whole. The server then becomes activated and inspired by Spirit to meet the immediate need.

True service is for the planet and for God. It is not for the individual ego. There may seem to be individuals in whom the divine Spark is awakened. There may be moments in which inspiration is conferred. There is the consummation of our task upon this planet in which revelation is possible. But all these are a piece of the larger picture that we work in. It is a vision of this planet Earth redeemed and purified by the Power of God.

To see our service as being events that are related to individuals is to miss the larger picture. The service that is being asked for today has nothing to do with individual achievement, enlightenment, illumination, protection, healing, etc. of ourselves or of others, but rather to play our small part in the purification of the planet by the bringing in of Christ's Power, the Sword, and God's Purpose.

Real service, therefore, is impersonal and wholly related to the group life.

What we Bring to Service

When we first come to the understanding of the need for service, we may feel that the service that we are to perform is our own service — service that we ourselves produce and create. We have something to offer, and we want to give it. But real service is being able to offer what the group provides.

When we first seek to serve, we may feel that it is our own energies that we are giving out to the world. But real service is giving the energies that are existent within and radiated by the group.

When we first come to service, we may feel that we ourselves need to create something, and make something happen. We feel we need to start something. But real service is participating in something that is not of our own making. It is a project that has nothing to do with ourselves.

We often feel that we have been called to come into this planet for a purpose. And this is so. But when we personalize this purpose and imagine that it is our own individual task, we are not seeing it clearly. When we look at that purpose through the eyes of the ego, it will inevitably be distorted. For we will imagine that the purpose is something about us, and it is not about us. We will imagine that it is about our own work and it has nothing to do with our own work. We will believe that we ourselves are the focal point through which the divine energies may appear, but those energies cannot be manifested through us, alone.

The essential prerequisite for service, therefore, is group consciousness. As long as we work alone we can only offer what we ourselves have connected up with, and this will inevitably be limited by our own perspective and vision. There is not really anything wrong with this, but it is not of the nature of true service.

When we connect up with the group, we will discover that the group has its own purpose. We may look at our own purpose and feel that it is somehow different than the group purpose. It is true that our own purpose is unique; it has its own individual key. But we will discover that the uniqueness of our own service only appears when we are working as a part of the group. We will discover that our own individual key can only be turned when our consciousness is identified with the group life.

If we imagine that what we ourselves offer is somehow different, that it can stand on its own, we are only deceiving ourselves. If we imagine that our own individual purpose precludes our association with the group purpose, then we are confused. It is like imagining that a hand can consist of only one finger. It is like believing that a house can be built with only one wall. We need each other to make the Work possible, and in that united service our own individual strengths can then shine.

The Purpose of Service Today

All servers have come into incarnation at this time to prepare for and participate in the great Transition that is taking place on this planet. There is simply no escaping the force and pervasiveness of this event. So many servers are busy establishing their own school, their own group, their own church, their own healing, and their own mode of assisting humanity; this has its merits, but it is not a part of the Work that they have come into incarnation to perform, for all of these efforts, however noble, will soon be swept away by the forces that are working on this planet. This civilization will not last, and anything built upon the sand of this civilization will also not last. This civilization will soon fall, just as Atlantis fell, and no trace of it will remain. It is meritorious to teach and heal, it will do temporary good, but if we ignore the keynote of these times — the reappearance of the Christ in Power — then we are not doing what we came into incarnation to do. We are not living out the purpose of our soul. We are not fulfilling our part in the divine Plan.

All servers are Called to assist in preparing humanity for the reappearance of the Christ — the inflow of Divine Love and Power that will cleanse this Earth of evil and manifest the Kingdom of God. We are Called! And only a precious few are listening to that Call, acting on that Call, and doing those things that are necessary to respond to that Call.

The primary characteristic of the new civilization is Unity Consciousness — group consciousness, the consciousness of Christ in manifestation. Service today involves planting the seed of that Unity Consciousness within the world. That seed already exists, it did not have to be created. It was pre-existing in the Kingdom of God, and brought forth into the world by the Will of Spirit. We do not create group consciousness, we connect up with it. We do not make group consciousness happen; we identify with the group that already exists. We do not learn to live in Unity; we realize that our Spirit within already lives in it, and therefore follow Spirit.

So how do we serve? By following Spirit. If we are following Spirit we are responding to the group energy, and coordinating ourselves with it. If we have followed Spirit then we will soon see that Spirit is the doorway to Unity consciousness within us. Spirit connects us up with the larger whole. Then the group life is our life. Then we are identified with the group, and not our self. We are living in Unity consciousness and are no longer trapped by the personality awareness.

In that Unity Consciousness, service is not only possible, it is inevitable. Service is a natural response to group conditions, and not something selected by the mind. It is the radiance of group energy, and not something that we ourselves evoke.

Realizing this, we will understand that our own life purpose is a part of the planetary purpose for this cycle. We will not imagine that we have some separate service to perform somewhere, but will unite in harmony with other servers — those who are already awakened to the group life and the group purpose. We will not imagine that we need to start something, or do something different somewhere. We will not be focused that much on teaching or healing, for we know that the time for this civilization is short, and all resources must be put forth to meet the need of the hour. We will not be trying to create something new or work on our own — and thus acting as a separated self — but rather uniting with the Unity Consciousness that is present on this earth today.

If we mean to fulfill our life's purpose, then we are Called to Unity — to identification with the group that consists of all others who live in that Unity. Then we will discover that our own vision was but a fraction of the group vision. That our own efforts at service are but a part of a larger, group effort. That our own ability to bring through divine Truth, Life, and inspiration were constrained by our previous focus in the self. That we have a key — a gift — that we can offer to the group, that is energized and made possible by the group life. That we can only find the fulfillment of our life's purpose by submerging it in the group purpose — in dedication to the divine Plan.
